The True Cost of Being Out of Shape

Most people don’t wake up one day suddenly out of shape.

It happens slowly.

You wake up, turn the alarm off, and it just feels like another day. You’re exhausted. Low energy. Your body feels stiff. Your mind feels foggy. You’re not excited. You’re not inspired. You’re just trying to get through the day.

Maybe years ago you trained consistently. Maybe you never really learned how. But as life got busier, kids, work, school, responsibilities, stress, little by little your health started drifting away.

You gained weight.

Your energy dropped.

Your body started hurting more.

You stopped moving the way you once did.

Sound familiar?

The reality is this.

Just like getting out of shape doesn’t happen overnight, staying healthy doesn’t happen overnight either.

It’s a daily commitment.

A decision.

A standard.

And the cost of neglecting it is much bigger than aesthetics.

The Real Cost

Being out of shape doesn’t just affect how you look with your shirt off.

It affects:

  • Your energy
  • Your confidence
  • Your mood
  • Your patience
  • Your resilience
  • Your ability to lead your family

Excess body fat, chronic stress, low physical activity, poor sleep, and lack of strength training are all associated with increased inflammation, lower energy levels, higher risk of chronic disease, and decreased quality of life.

And whether we realize it or not, our kids are watching.

“Monkey see, monkey do.”

Research consistently shows that parents heavily influence the health behaviors of their children. Kids often adopt the nutrition habits, activity levels, and lifestyle standards they grow up around.

That means if we normalize:

  • inactivity
  • fast food
  • low effort
  • constant exhaustion
  • sitting all day

our children are far more likely to follow the same path.

And this isn’t about shame or judgment.

It’s about awareness.

Because the consequences are real.

When your kids ask you to play and you can’t get off the couch…

When walking up stairs leaves you exhausted…

When your body hurts constantly…

When your stress tolerance becomes lower and lower…

your world slowly becomes smaller.

Not just physically.

Mentally too.

Your ability to endure hard things decreases because you stop doing hard things.

Discipline weakens.

Confidence weakens.

Resilience weakens.

America Has a Health Crisis

We live in one of the most overfed and under-moved societies in history.

Fast food is everywhere.

Ultra-processed food is normalized.

Convenience is worshipped.

Movement is optional.

And every year we see:

  • higher obesity rates
  • more chronic disease
  • lower physical activity
  • more anxiety and depression
  • less resilience

But there is another path.

Not an easy path.

But a simple one.

Choose hard.

Choose what’s required.

Train your body.

Move daily.

Lift weights.

Walk more.

Sleep better.

Eat more whole foods.

Develop discipline.

Become someone your family can depend on.

Resistance Training Is Bigger Than Muscles

Resistance training is exactly what it sounds like,

training through resistance.

And the byproduct is not just a stronger body.

It’s a stronger mind.

Research consistently shows that resistance training improves:

  • strength
  • energy
  • mental health
  • confidence
  • insulin sensitivity
  • bone density
  • longevity
  • physical function as we age

But maybe more importantly…

it teaches people how to keep going when things are hard.

That lesson carries over into parenting, marriage, leadership, business, and life.

My Anchor

I have days where I don’t feel like training.

Days where I don’t feel like doing much at all.

But I still move forward because my identity is rooted in becoming the best father I can be.

I don’t train only for myself anymore.

I train for my wife.

I train for my children.

I train so I can lead from the front.

I train so I can stay capable.

I train so I can be present for the people I love most.

That’s my anchor.

And everyone needs one.

Because motivation fades.

Life gets chaotic.

Stress never disappears completely.

But purpose gives you something to hold onto when feelings disappear.

So Where Do You Start?

You do not need to overhaul your entire life overnight.

Start small.

1. Walk Daily

Even 20–30 minutes per day improves cardiovascular health, energy, mood, recovery, and longevity.

2. Strength Train 2–4 Times Per Week

Focus on:

  • squats
  • hinges
  • pushes
  • pulls
  • carries
  • core work

You do not need random punishment workouts.

You need consistency.

3. Eat More Whole Foods

Prioritize:

  • protein
  • fruits
  • vegetables
  • water
  • minimally processed foods

4. Sleep More

Most adults are under-recovered and overstimulated.

Sleep is one of the biggest performance enhancers on earth.

5. Stop Chasing Motivation

Build systems instead:

  • scheduled training times
  • meal prep
  • walking after dinner
  • accountability
  • environments that support success

The Goal

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is capability.

To feel athletic again.

To move without pain.

To have energy again.

To play with your kids.

To lead your family well.

To stay strong as you age.

To become harder to kill physically and mentally.

Aesthetics become the byproduct.

But the real reward is becoming the type of person your family can rely on.

So ask yourself.

What’s your anchor?

What’s the reason you know you need to take your health seriously again?

Because whether we like it or not, the cost of staying out of shape eventually catches up to all of us.

And I care deeply about helping fight against this because I know what’s truly at stake.

This isn’t just about losing weight.

It’s about becoming strong enough physically and mentally to show up for the people who matter most.
